Seed of a City: Site responsive sculptural installation as part of Mantle Arts Imagine a City... temporally sited in an empty shop unit in the Odeon Arcade adjacent to Leicester market.

2007

INMATES: Site responsive sculptural installation and accompanying publication, funded by Arts Council England, exploring the early history of the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

2006

Urban Surface: Site specific shop window exhibition, Art House Studios, Nottingham.

As part of Nottingham’s Open Festival of Contemporary Art 2006 I created a site specific piece in a shop window. This work followed the theme of ‘Urban Surface’ in that it responded to the patterns created as city pavement is worn, repaired, repaved and developed. The work highlighted this unseen complexity by being an observational study of the piece of pavement the viewer was standing on as they viewed the work.

Exhibition duration: 1 week. Audience: >1000

2005

Chronological Marks: Amberhouse Gallery, Tideswell, Derbyshire.

This exhibition was the culmination of the Chronological Marks series showing work created over a 4 year period representing a number of manifestations of this theme including: Patterns, Landscapes, Architecturals and Iconics. Approximately 40 pieces of work in total.

Exhibition duration: 2 months. Audience: >400

Chronological Marks: Draycott Festival, Derbyshire.

An exhibition of selected Chronological Marks works exhibited within a private home as part of the festival. The exhibition had a strong interactive ethos with me providing resources and background information to explain the concepts behind the work. I was also present throughout the exhibition to explain and discuss the work with visitors.

Exhibition duration: 1 Weekend. Audience: >150. Sales: >£700

2004

Chronological Marks: Flying Goose Gallery, Nottingham.

A small selling show of selected Chronological Marks works within the gallery space of the cafe.

Chronological Marks/Audio Visual: Wirksworth Festival.

An exhibition of selected Chronological Marks works exhibited in the Moot Hall in Wirksworth. This exhibition was in tandem with the experimental music of EMC as part of their Loop Space audio visual presentation. During the weekend I also supplied live feed visual art from both laptop and camera to be mixed by a VJ.

Commissions

2006

Urban Surface: Geldards LLP, Nottingham.

Major commission funded by Arts & Business and Geldards involving 9 artists. My work was a development of the Urban Surface theme which responds directly to the patterns created by the man made surfaces within any chosen environment. This particular work was in response to the structure and form of the central staircase and produced a pair of 2 metre long wall-based mixed media works for opposite walls in a meeting room.

Chronological Marks: ‘Settlement’, private commission.

A privately commissioned piece employing the theme of Chronological Marks. This theme responds to a ‘language of pattern’ which has reiterated itself over the millennia from Bronze Age rock carving to housing estates and motherboards. ‘Settlement’ was an analysis of patterns created by street patterns, ploughing and archaeological remains.

2005

Chronological Marks: ‘Fire’, private commission.

A privately commissioned piece employing the Chronological   Marks theme.Fire was based on a study of Bronze Age rock  carving.

2004

Colourfield: 2.5 metre wide panel, AMK Design, Plumtree, Nottingham.

‘Colourfield’ is a painting technique developed to create the Chronological Marks series. It involves the spraying of oil and water based paints on to a horizontal surface and is controlled by complex masking techniques. This technique was employed to meet the brief for a large abstract panel at AMK Design’s headquarters.

Chronological Marks: ‘3 Henges’, AMK Design, Plumtree, Nottingham.

A second commission to the Chronological Marks theme resulting in a triptych based on the form of ancient henge monuments.

2003

Chronological Marks: ‘C39 UK’ Nottingham University School of Education.

Framed work on paper investigating the hieroglyphic nature of product coding and barcode. Now sited within the School of Education.

2002

Chronological Marks: ‘Two Strata with Marks’, Food Mountains Restaurant, Nottingham.

This piece investigated the process of natural stratification in a geological context and how man’s mark making appears to stratify within the archaeological record. The resulting piece was a 1.5 metre long wall-mounted panel on the main feature wall of the restaurant.
