Commission

Some questions you may have about the commissioning process ...

I'd like some help

'I know I want something, but I'm not sure what.'

A normal and reasonable comment, and the position that most clients find themselves in.

It is the artist's job to assist you in developing your initial thoughts, however vague, into an idea or proposal which is unique to you.

The consultation process

The process starts with an initial consultation. You will be given the opportunity to express any thoughts or ideas you have: 'I was thinking of a large piece, to fill this space. Maybe figurative/abstract?' would be a perfectly acceptable start.

From here you will be shown both the artist's work and examples of the work of others. Your budget, tastes, the decor of the site, and if appropriate your audience, will be taken into account to create the starting 'brief'.

From this 'brief' an accurate quote will be prepared and some initial artwork presented and sited digitally - for you to get some flavour of what a finished piece may look like.

At this point you can decide not to proceed with the commission and no charge will be made.

If you decide to go ahead, more consultation will take place and you will be given frequent updates on the progress of the work until it is completed to your satisfaction.

Payment is due only on successful completion of the project.

I want to know

It is quite reasonable that a client should have a very clear idea about what it is they want. It is the artist's job to work within the client's requirements. You should feel confident that your ideas and thoughts have value within the commissioning process and are welcomed at all times. The commissioning of artwork revolves around a meeting of minds between client and artist.

The Consultation Process

Your consultation will begin with a discussion around the style of the work that you'd like.

Ideally, if it is convenient to you, the consultation will take place in the location in which the finished work is to be mounted.

Feel free to discuss any artist whose work you particularly admire, or any artistic movement that you feel would be appropriate. If desired, Chris can bring a portfolio of work by a variety of artists to explore the exact match for your requirements. We will need to take into account your budget, tastes, decor of the site and, if appropriate, your audience to create the starting 'brief'.

From this 'brief' an accurate quote will be prepared and some initial artwork will be presented and sited digitally for you to get some flavour of what a finished piece may look like.

At this point you can decide not to proceed with the commission and no charge will be made.

If you decide to go ahead, more consultation will take place and you will be given frequent updates on the progress of the work until it is completed to your satisfaction.

Payment is due only on completion of the project.
